Catching up
August 4, 2008
Ah-h-h, summertime, and the living is easy. So easy I haven’t kept up with All Together Now for a couple weeks…but I have spent the afternoon beginning to catch up. While I know a little about RSS and podcasts, there’s always more to learn. I already subscribe to Bloglines and didn’t really want to start a new reader, but I was intrigued by Michael’s reason for using Netvibes–it allows him to group like feeds together. As a librarian, I wondered if Bloglines had anything similar. Their folders do allow grouping and now I have folders! I love feeling it is more organized!
Our daughter turned me on to downloading podcasts to listen to in the car this year, and we are hooked! We mostly listen to NPR’s, but I do Tech Chicks when alone in the car. Finding educational podcasts is tricky, but I have managed to find some. I am particularly interested in finding some well-done podcasts by elementary students. One of my targets this coming year is to do some professional development for staff and I want to be able to demo existing podcasts in content areas.
With an IT’s help, we put two podcasts up on our school site, both dealing with literature and encouraging reading. The students loved making them and listening to them and have asked for more this year (which will mean they will be true podcasts and not just audio files up on the web, right?) I will be experimenting with GarageBand to learn how to do this myself. I’ll be perusing the comments on Podcasting to gain knowledge and links.
